Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check if my vehicle's MOT is valid?

Enter your vehicle registration number in the search box on the homepage. The system will display the current MOT status, including the expiry date. If your MOT has expired, you should not drive the vehicle except to a pre-booked MOT test appointment. The MOT status is updated daily from the DVSA database.

What information does the service provide about a vehicle?

Our service provides complete official DVLA vehicle details (make, model, year, engine size, fuel type), real-time tax status, and full MOT history including detailed test results, advisory notices, failures, and verified mileage readings at each test. Every vehicle lookup also includes our enhanced report — currently free during our early access launch — with additional analysis including mileage anomaly detection, technical specifications, vehicle insights, and mileage trend charts.

Why might a vehicle not appear in the system?

A vehicle may not appear if it's exempt from MOT testing (such as vehicles manufactured before 1960), recently registered and not yet tested, or registered in Northern Ireland or outside Great Britain. Our database is updated daily with the latest information from DVSA and DVLA.

What's included in the free enhanced report?

Every vehicle lookup on motorwise.io gives you the full experience at no cost during our early access launch. You get complete DVLA vehicle details, real-time tax and MOT status, full MOT test history with pass/fail results, advisory notices and failure items, plus our enhanced report which adds mileage trend analysis with anomaly detection, vehicle insights derived from DVLA data, and detailed technical specifications.

What's included in the enhanced vehicle report?

The enhanced report provides deeper analysis beyond the standard vehicle lookup. It includes vehicle insights derived from DVLA data, detailed technical specifications, interactive mileage and health charts showing trends over the vehicle's MOT history, and mileage insights with anomaly detection to flag potential odometer concerns.

How does your mileage verification work?

Our mileage analysis examines every odometer reading recorded during MOT tests throughout the vehicle's history. The system identifies potential concerns including mileage decreases between tests, unusually low annual mileage that doesn't match typical usage patterns, and readings that appear suspicious.

What vehicle insights are included in the enhanced report?

The enhanced report includes vehicle insights derived from DVLA data covering four key areas. Ownership context shows how long the vehicle has been with its current keeper. Status assessment confirms MOT and tax compliance. Emissions profile details CO2 output and ULEZ or Clean Air Zone compliance. Fuel efficiency estimates provide expected MPG or miles-per-kWh based on the vehicle's specifications.

Is there a cost for the enhanced report?

No — enhanced reports are completely free during our early access launch. We're building the UK's most comprehensive vehicle intelligence platform and offering full access at no cost while we refine the service.

How up-to-date is the information?

Our data is updated every 24 hours directly from DVSA and DVLA databases - faster than many services that update weekly. MOT test results typically appear in our system within 4-6 hours of completion.

How is my data protected when using this service?

We adhere strictly to the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Your personal information is encrypted during transmission and storage. We only collect the information necessary to provide the service.

Which browsers are supported?

This service is compatible with all modern browsers including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari. For the best experience and security, we recommend using the latest version of your preferred browser.

What should I do if the service is unavailable?

If you experience technical difficulties accessing the service, please first check your internet connection and try refreshing the page. Our service undergoes maintenance typically between 2am and 4am GMT on Sundays.

Is this service officially endorsed by DVSA/DVLA?

While we are not directly operated by DVSA/DVLA, our service uses official government data through approved channels. We have direct integration with DVSA databases for MOT information and DVLA databases for vehicle registration details.

How accurate is your information compared to other services?

Our data comes directly from DVSA and DVLA databases through official integration channels. Unlike services that rely on third-party data aggregators, we retrieve information at source, ensuring it matches current official records.

What happens if the information provided is incorrect?

We take data quality seriously. If you discover any incorrect information in our reports, please contact our support team and we will investigate promptly.

I'm buying my first car - is this service really necessary?

Buying your first car is an important decision, and taking time to research any vehicle you're considering is worthwhile. Our service lets you instantly check MOT history, vehicle details, and mileage trends to help filter out problematic vehicles early.

Do I need to check vehicles from reputable dealers?

Independent vehicle checks benefit any purchase, regardless of source. While dealers are required to disclose known faults, they may not have access to the complete technical history we analyse.

How quickly is the enhanced report available?

Enhanced reports are generated instantly — typically within 15-30 seconds of requesting one. Our systems analyse the vehicle's data in real-time to compile your report.

What does early access mean?

We're currently in an early access launch phase, which means all enhanced report features are available completely free. Some data sources are still being integrated, so report coverage will expand over time.
